Hi Paul,

A few points you may be able to fill out. The land deeds between Henry Cerf and Falconer - the story goes that while John and Sarah/Abigail were growing up there were frequent attempts made to kill him because the others were not being included in inheritance. There are graphic descriptions of his badly beaten body being left for dead and his horse returning home without him. These repeated attempts is what prompted the hurriedly arranged marriage between John & Abi at age 18 so as to complete the elaborate scheme by which Thomas sought to protect the land for his first born son
John by having Cerf "hold" the land until his adulthood via a land deed. According to my info there was no money exchanged between them suggesting an enormous trust between Thomas and Cerf whose secretary was Solomon Meyers who subsequently married a Falconer. The Myers are to this day part of Queensbury. Free Masonry came up during the Cerf/Falconer story but I could not follow up. Cerf bought Thomas coffee land holdings up the hill and sold him the 100 acres that was Queensbury.
Cerf is said to have immediately transferred the lands to John upon his marriage at age 18 to Abigail/Sarah as even though he was not yet 21 (adulthood)as marriage established adulthood.

The name Sarah did not come up at all only Abi so could Abigail have been Sarah's other name? Then there was the shock when Thomas brought home Catherine from his trip to Kingston as his wife! Susanah is everywhere in the story as the original and continuing love interest of Thomas. Catherine's first child was George Ann who died after childbirth. Catherine had TB. Thomas caught the TB and Susanah had to nurse him back to health after Catherine's death having John. By that time in reaction to Catherine arriving as his wife Susanah married Nicholas Bent and began a family by having Abigail.

Could she have been Susannah Bent and then married Powell or
Susannah Powell marrying Nicholas Bent?

Her story has fascinated me and so I have dug it out. She went on to have four illegitimate children with Thomas before his death of which the firey Ann who married Black independent farmer Gordon was one. She is spoken of as a total terror who broke all taboos and from whose line came either my grandmother or grandfather ... there is a story that despite subsequent conscious efforts to "wash out" the Gordon blackness the first born of all her descendants were born dark as my Grandfather William and my father Basil were. All his other siblings were quite white, blond and blue-eyed while william's and Dad's face carried the Falconer imprint. Have you any records that could clarify which of them derive from the Falconer/Gordon clan? The feud arose between these four children and John/Abi who were the legitimate ones being protected by Susannah to continue the "Official Falconer Line". She was supposed to be wealthy in her own right and not only held some of Thomas' wealth in trust for John but gave the bulk of her own over to them through Abi - hence the hatred that seemed to have arose.

Then there is the part of the story that deals with religion. These Scottish settlers did not recognise the ruling Anglicans and refused to recognise their authority in registering births, marriages, deaths and deeds in the parish register. They were presebyterians and Free Masons. A subsequent John Falconer is entombed in the Halfwaytree Parish Church and was one of the two who established the Kingston Chapter of Free Masons. I did speak to someone there to verify but had no time to dig further.

Cerf is another intriguing part of the story and it turned out that he sailed his ship named for him into Jamaican waters looking for suitable tracks of land on which to settle Germans and bought up several holdings ...again I had no time to follow that up but clearly he may have been involved in the settlement nearby Queensbury called Seaforth Town which is still settled by German descendants. It would be interesting to have a look at his land dealings in the island.

Then there is the aspect of the Falconer records that seem to have been disturbed over the years and some that crop up in the Westmoreland records coming forward . Falconer women were reputed to have been very beautiful and so were married into several prominent families and it is believed that other investigations carried out perhaps by people who were not professionally inclined disturbed/removed/destroyed/ whatever some of the records to "build family trees". Did you look into the Westmoreland records and follow the Falconer trail around the island or did you stick to Queensbury?

For your records my Aunt Berita Falconer-Powell wife of Curly Powell, other brother of Luther Powell, father of Colin Powell has died. She was the last of my father's siblings

Blessings, Glowena
