Hello Daniel,
The name was not identified by a Catholic Church, it was identified by THE HOLY OFFICE OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OF SPAIN. The Holy Office administered the inquisition in all of Spain and its colonies. The Holy office obtained the names by forced census of the Juderias. You will also find the name on the rolls of Jewish religious records in England and the Ottoman Empire. These are two of the countries to which the Sephardim fled. These and many other facts are explained on Sephardim.com.

Which branch owns the crest? I don't know.
