Hi, I am French Canadian, was born in Montreal in 1948 and moved to Toronto 19 years ago.

I had the opportunity to visit Bignay France last week.
Which is the home town of Guillaume Falardeau, it’s a very small village with no more than 30 houses. With most of those being new, its seems to have become a bedroom community to St Jean d'Angely a city of approx 20,000 people situated 8km away. Traveling for 10 days throughout France I saw many old churches and those that dated back to the 10th to 12th century had floors that were not more worn than the ones in the church of Bignay, so chances are that Guillaume could have stopped in the church before probably heading to Bordeau’s docks and leaving for North America and New France as a soldier and landed in Quebec city.

The Mairie was closed, so I was unable to get information, but walking through the cemetery I found one tombstone for Victor Folardeau who died in 1937 at the age of 88.

The documents I have suggest that in Celtic times of the region of Santons, these people had a sacred cult for fire and constantly kept fires burning. In their language FOL meant Fire and ARDEO meant ARDENT.

So it’s quite possible that Folardeau was the original name.

So since we really all come from the same ancestor, I will gladly share the photos I took of Bignay, its cemetery and church.

Thanks, Jean.
