Please forgive me, a white person, for horning in on your discussion. On my mother's side I am descended from three families who originated in England and Scotland and came to the US in the 1600 and 1700's. Eventually they migrated from Virginia and North Carolina to Mississippi. These three families intermarried back and forth among each other so frequnetly that after a few generations they were all cousins or closer. I have been told they owned black slaves. I have even been told that one of the families did early slave tradering from Barbadoes to the Virginia colony. And yet the whole slave owning story is highly disputed by cousins of mine who say our ancestors were in the lumbering business, not the planation owning business and they didn't have slaves. But my mother's side of the family tells a different tale and even tells specific stories, so this has left me confused about the truth of the matter. Surely one cannot just willy-nilly make up, multi-generational detailed stories without there being some truth in the matter?Anyway, when I saw the Breland family name mentioned in conjunction with Fairleys I had to respond. I am from the Fairley/Batson/Bond family, but all three of these families intermarried heavily into the Breland and Hatten families. I guess i am looking for verification of my mother's family stories. Not that i am proud of that background. But I DO think it is better to know and accept the truth.
