I have a very distant cousin who lives in the Toronto area who is a decendant of the Fairfields you are writing about. Our common ancestor is John Fairfield of Wenham Mass. Legend has it that before they (Fairfield's - at least this line) arrived in Ireland they did flee France and changed the name.
