Douglas Fairbanks Obit
GRAYLING — Douglas Fairbanks, 86, of Grayling, Mich., passed away on Jan. 22, 2008, at the Genesys Hospice Center in Goodrich, Mich.
He was born in Adrian Township on March 14, 1921, to Eli and Grace (Houghtby) Fairbanks. He was a graduate of Britton High School and spent most of his life in the Britton area. In September 1947, he married Christine Church. They lived in Britton for 49 years until moving to Clinton in 1996. Doug later moved to Grayling in 2005.
Doug served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a diesel mechanic on the mine sweeper USS Strength. He was employed at Keeling Motor Sales, which he later bought and managed as Britton Motor Sales. He was widely recognized for his workmanship and honest business practices. He was certified by the State of Michigan as a Master Mechanic.
Douglas was active in community service; he was a member of the Britton Village Council and served as Britton’s Mayor for several years. He was a lifelong member of the Britton Congregational Christian Church and served as a trustee and Deacon there for many years. He also was a Cubmaster for Britton’s Scott Troop 23. He was active as a Britton Odd Fellow and was a member of the American Legion Post #155 in Britton. He was the first bus driver for the Britton school system.
Douglas is survived be two sons, Douglas Lee (Sherrie) Fairbanks of Grayling and David Larry (Terri) Fairbanks of Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren, Emily and David Fairbanks and Eric and Evan Eggers, all of Florida. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Douglas was preceded in death by his beloved wife Christine in 2001, after 54 years of marriage; his parents, Eli and Grace, and beloved daughter Darlene Kay. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charles (Anne), Elis (Christine), Elwood (Luella); and his sisters, Dorothy (Ralph) Mull, Marie (Clarence) Arft, Marjorie (Clarence) Hilgeneck, Phyllis (Holden) McElroy; his half brother, Merlyn (Irene) Fairbanks, and half sister, Iva.
At his request, Douglas has been cremated. The family will receive friends for a celebration of his life at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the Britton Congregational Christian Church where services will be at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jack Brown officiating.
