John Kinninmond Fairbairn born 1816 in Scotland is my great-grandfather. He has been referred to by Peter Higgins and Neil Carfra. He was the son of an unmarried couple, David Fairbairn and Margaret Kinninmond. In Scotland at that time, a child of an unmarried couple was given the surnames of both parents, her maiden name and his name. Margaret married Francis Erskine. The 1841 Census list this household which included John Fairbairn. The eldest son of John and his wife Grace Cunningham was named Francis Erskine Fairbairn. David came circa 1820 to Canada through Whitehall, New York, where he married his first wife Lucinda Simpson. He settled in Brockville, Ontario. In 1846 John K. Fairbairn came to Brockviile.
