RESCONSTRUCTION-LIFE STYLE (ALABAMA), pg 167. Conecuh Co.Public
Library,
Evergree, Ala.:
'One of the largest and probably the first steam powered
sawmills in the area was owned by SAMUEL P. FEAGIN and his in-
laws the Kendalls. This mill was built in the 1880's and was
located about one mile north of Snow Hill Church on the creek
that heads up near the old Robinson Tanyard. The creek was
dammed and its flow was diverted down a ditch that had been dug
for about one-half mile in the head ofthe branch that flowed
south by the home of Elias Godwin and to the Conecul River about
three miles away. The water still flows down this ditch and the
creek has become known as the Feagin Timber Ditch Creek. Pine
logs were cut and hauled to the mill where they were squared
into timber from eight to fourteen inches square and from
twenty to forty feet long. The exess lumber cut when forming
these timbers was used for local construction. In 1888 Samuel P.
Feagin's son, FRANK, collected the best of this excess lumber,
had ithand planed, and used it to build hishouse, which still
stands near the mill site. Close inspection ofthis house reveals
that not a single board was spliced and some of the
boards used on the front porch are 25 feet long....." Name of
Mill:Kendall -&- Feagin; location: Fairfield; owner: Kendall -&-
Feagin; Dailey Capacity Board Fee: 45,000. Source: Memorial
Records of Alabama, Vo..I, pgs 312 -&- 313.
