Can't tell from your email address whether you are in UK or other location. In UK, you can use the Civil Registration Indexes of births to locate his birth certificate (Family Record Center in London and County Record Offices). You might have to search up to 40 volumes (4 quarters per year) but they are alphabetical and the search goes fairly quickly.
The Mormon Family History Libraries might have the records on microfiche -- they do in Salt Lake City and may also have the microfiche in their local family libraries. That would be your best bet in the US. With a name like Claude Roland it should be easier to get the right record than if you were looking for John...
