Thank you for the reply, Jarod. It has long been held that a Norman named Truelove rescued William when he was unhorsed and his helmet bashed in so badly he couldn't breathe and that William thus renamed his rescuer 'eyr'. It would seem odd for a Norman to have such an English sounding name as Truelove. Another theory is that the surname EYRE comes from the Norman le heir or l'eyr meaning one who inherits which sounds more plausible. Lesley has done some excellent research digging thru old English records that still exist and her theory sounds the most plausible. It accounts not only for the pronunciation and spelling of EYRE but also the severed leg in the crest of the coat of arms. Descending from William the Conqueror and having saved his life are two different situations and I was just curious as to the indications of descent from him. Which history of the EYRE family do you have, Jarod? I'm always interested in any history of the family I can find. Notify Administrator about this message?
