I am an Exley from the John William side of the family. You may be interested in the family history , researched by another relative:
William Exley married Jane Duckworth . She was baptised on 8 Dec. 1844 , the daughter of John Duckworth, a weaver, and his wife Jane. William and Jane married on 22 Dec 1861, his 21 st birthday. He was described on the marriage certificate as a cloth locker. She was described as a weaver. He signed his name. She made her mark. William became a manager of a cotton mill in Great Harwood by 1868 and the manager by 1878. In 1882 he moved to Whalley Bridge in Derbyshire to become the manager of the Goyt Mill. William and his wife had eleven children: John William(18/10/1862)Mark (16/4/1865) James (16/6/1868) Albert (22/9/1870) Mary Jane (5/3/1873) Elizabeth ellen (9/9/1875) Charles Vincent (25/3/1878) Walter Archibald (10/10/1880) Clarence Parker (23/9/1882- born Chapelenle Frith) Archibald(16/3/1887) and Gertrude 8/3/1890) Walter , Archibald and Gertrude all died very young. According to my relative's research Mary Jane was unmarried and died on 29th December 1951 and is interred at the family vault in Great Harwood!

My side of the d#family is descended from John William Exley who married Rosa Manning in 1888 in Stockport . They are buried at the Exley family vault in Taxal Derbyshire (which is just outside Whalley Bridge.) Their eldest was Percy William who married Florence Emily Nicholls in 1924 and who were my grandparents. My father is David Exley. he had a brother John (who has now died) and a brother Richard who runs Exley publications with his wife Helen (they're on the web)After Percy there was Norman , Gladys, alfred, Arnold (John) and Phylis. John's wife Barbara is still alive I think down South. My father and brother now live in Devon, so I'm one of the few remaining Exley's from this line still living within 10 miles or so of Whalley Bridge. My dad has a photo of his father and siblings with the first car that existed in Whalley Bridge at the tun of the century. Somewhere he also has a newspaper clipping from when William died- the whole of Whalley Bridge shut up for the day as a sign of respect for a very important man. Nowadays the family vault at taxal , a mile or two out of W halley Bridge is sadly overgrown with the weeds being trimmed by a marauding donkey! I hope this information helps a little. Sandra Walker (nee Exley)
