Exley Family Genealogy Forum
Isaac Exley was a very wealthy industrialist from Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, circa 1850 (any further information welcome). He had two children a son and daughter, the son being my Great Grandfather. For some reason he was cut off, or he disassociated himself from his family as he moved to Leeds, married the illegitemate daughter of a Scarborough businessman and lived in greatly reduced circumstances working in a department store.
For reasons unknown to his descendants he hanged himself leaving a wife and very young family in abject poverty. She took her children back to Scarborough, her mother's home, and worked cleaning public lavatories to support them. She received no financial assistance from her husband's family, yet my Grandfather recalls receiving hand-me-downs from rich cousins he had never met. He remembers feeling very out-of-place wearing the uniform of one of the top public schools.
I assume that Isaac had brothers and sisters. Maybe some other branch of the family knows why he and my Great Grandfather fell out?
