Hi Victoria,
Here is the Ewer information from my cousin’s records. Bear in mind that I haven’t worked on this part of the family myself so can’t vouch personally for the info. My cousin worked on this Before computers.
Charles Cary Ewer
Born 9th January 1839 in Barnstable, Massachusetts
Married Mary Ellen Schutter on the 2nd June 1874
Died 13th February 1879 in Washington D.C.
His parents were Henry and Pauline Crowell (Ryder) Ewer – married October 16 1836 in Barnstable, Mass.
Their children were:
1. Susan Sturgis Ewer – born 24th April 1837
2. Charles Cary Ewer – see above
My grandmother wrote as follows:
“Charles Cary Ewer’s mother was a Miss Pauline Crowell Ryder, She was called Polly and said to be very beautiful. She had a sister Rebecca who married a man by the name of Crocker – no children. She had a brother Frank Ryder who married a Miss Prince of Boston and they had one son – Nathan – who had two children – Frank and Hattie. She had another sister who married a man by the name of Charles Cary who lived in California, and my father was named for him.”
Polly died 11th June 1841.
Henry remarried I November 1842 – to Orinda Case…and I think you’ve got all that information already.
While I’m on this subject I’ll just say that I had a brief look at my copy of Charles Cary Ewer’s Civil War letters. (It’s quite long so I just skimmed. NB it’s in typescript.) and saw a few references to Charles’ brother Henry.
Letter 2nd December 1862 – Camp Stevenson, ‘Newberne’, N.C.
“Henry arrived from the Hospital at Portsmouth, having been there five months. He is much better, spent the evening with him at his quarters.”
4th December
“Henry went to join his regt on picket, about eight miles from here.”
9th December = letter to “Sis”
“…I am glad you mustered courage sufficient to sing in church.”
“Bro. Henry is much better now and if he does not get overtested again, I think he will get along nicely. He is somewhat downhearted, and you and Sue must encourage him all you can by writing.”
Henry Ewer (father of Charles Cary)
Born January 1814 in Barnstable, Mass.
Died 16th April 1861 in Barnstable
Henry Ewer’s parents were
Ansel Ewer and Susannah
Ansel was born in 1780 and died circa 1830 in Barnstable.
My cousin notes “A record from the Court of Probate, Barnstable, dated Sept. 14, 1830 designated Ebenezer Bacon, a merchant, guardian of Henry Ewer, a minor.”
Ansel’s parents were
Eleazer Ewer and Abigail Lothrop
Eleazer was born 26th August 1752 in Plymouth, Mass.
Married on the 27th June 1775
Died in Barnstable Mass.
Abigail Lothrop was born on the 8th April 1752 in Barnstable.
Previous generation:
Eleazer’s father was Thomas Ewer (born 3rd October 1726 and married on the 21t January 1748/9)
And his mother was Lydia Harlow (born 25th February 1723/4)
Abigail Lothrop’s parents were
Barnabas Lothrop (born 3rd February 1743)
And Thankful Gorham
It’s fairly straightforward after that – and you may have this information already. It’s Lydia Harlow and Abigail Lothrop who take us back to the Mayflower. I can go back a bit further with the Ewers as well if you want that.
As for the Family Bible, I’ve scanned these pages (not very well – but needed to be careful of the paper). I would be happy to send those to you as attachments – there are 4 pages.
The handwriting is fairly old – but obviously I don’t know who made the entries or when they were made or how accurate they were.
Here’s what they say.
