Ewart family history in Scotland

I have heard from senior members of our branch of the
"Ewart Family Tree" That going back to Mary Queen of Scott. The family story is that when Mary, being a Stewart, was put to death that the Stewart's drop the "St" from our name. It is a great story, but Mary Queen Of Scott spelled as "Sturat."
We had a family reunion 20 July 08 and again the story was told. There is a connection to Ensign Ewart, it seems to be a story that has long roots, but limited documentation. John Barr Ewart is my great, great, great grandfather. Would enjoy hearing any info.

In family pictures we have 2 pictures of Ensign Ewart monument and we do not know who took the pictures for no member has traveled Scotland. After 1938 when Ensign Ewart was laid to rest
