On a visit to Edinburgh Castle in 1976 I purchased a small souvenir picture of a soldier on a white, galloping (rearing?) horse. The soldier was wearing a red tunic with three stripes on his right arm, and carried a French tri-colour flag with an eagle on the finial. The inscription on the back of the frame, under the heading "Ensign Ewart, Royal North British Dragoons, Scots Greys" reads as follows:

"Born at Elvanfoot in Peeblesshire around 1769, Charles Ewart enlisted in the Royal North British Dragoons. Known as the Scots Greys, the regiment was raised in 1678 to quell the Covenanters. Of consistently high repute, the Greys were described by Sir Walter Scott as 'maintaining a character greatly superior to that of other regiments'. At Waterloo on 18 June, 1815 the Scots Greys earned acclaim for their bravery in the charge of the Union Brigade. Of the 416 Scots Greys who began the day 200 men and 224 horses were killed or wounded.

"At Waterloo Serjeant Ewart cut down several defenders and captured the Eagle of the French 45th Regiment of the Line. For his exploit he was commissioned Ensign by the Prince Regent. He died on 23 March, 1846, aged 77. He is buried on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, leaving his regiment the legacy of the eagle which to this day has been a feature of their cap badge.

"Amalgamated in 1971 with the 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wale's Dragoon Guards) and now the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers & Greys), the new regiment maintains the special standard of family values and the emphasis on cheerful professional skill so marked in its predecessors."

The inscription also mentions that the original painting was by Joan Robinson.
