Alexander Ewart married Eliza or Elizabeth McBurnet or McBurnie in about 1867. They were born in Ireland in about 1846 and '49 respectively. Although their second child, John, was born in Ireland in abt.1871, all their other children were born and raised in Govan & Partick in Glasgow, Scotland. They were Mary (1868), James (1873), Alexander (1874), Emily (1879), Thomas(1881), William (1883), and Jane (1887).
Sometime about 1900, it is said, Alexander and Elizabeth went down to a pier on the Clyde with some of their children including their son Alexander. "Are you coming with us to Canada?" he asked Alexander. He replied, "No dad, I'm staying here to marry Annie Forbes."
He and Annie married in Glasgow in 1901 and raised a large family including my mother-in-law. My researches do not, as yet, reveal who went with Alexander and Elizabeth to Canada, but there is a hint that Alexander did well there in the lumber business.
If that tale ring's a bell with any of you Ewart's in Canada, I would be very pleased to hear from you. In turn, I would be happy to pass on all I know and learn of the Glasgow side of the family.
