Hello there "cousins"

I too am very knew to this field, but I can assure you that a long line of my ancestors came from Scotland. As far back as the early 19th Century, and likely before, Ewart births were registered in Edinburg.

My grandfather, a piper with the Black Watch Regiment of Canada, used to wear the Royal Stewart tartan, and liked to say that we were once all Stewarts, but our line was kicked out of the Clan because we weren't saints and therefore had to drop the "St" part.

From what I have been able to deduce, the Ewarts appear to be from lowland Scotland, near the British border; perhaps even across the border into northern England. Since tartans are a highland tradition, there is no "Ewart" tartan per se, although one book I had suggested the McEwen tartan would be appropriate. I like the suggestion, since this tartan is a very attractive one.

R.G. Ewart (in Canada)
