Sometimes a city or area would have a clan assocaition mostly in the lowlands.I guess you could join any clan you felt something for. Ewarts are associated with many clans usually to do with where they lived.Being in the Cambell clan living Macdonalds terriorty could be hazardous to your health.I know a Mcdonald who belongs to the Kirks and also not all clans are always listed. Most of what I am saying is historial common sense. If you were to start a clan now no one would seek to aquire your lands by force, but at one time it would be a serious thing. The Macfarlands seem receptive to Ewarts,Rothburgh the area in the lowlands, some Stewart associations being the royal clan may look presumuois, just don't get hung up on it Ewarts belonged to different clans, even surnames with clans could be part of an other clan, maybe your surname is Moore but your banch historially is not welcomed. This is the way have learned it through Scottish meetings and fairs. You join anyone you want if they will have you. St. Andrews is open to anyone with Scottish roots but does not exclude you for not being Scottish but why would you join if your not.Moral of story don't get hung up because clan history did not stop at some certain date it is still going just not as volient we are get along now.I hope this helps.
