Hi Fiona,
I have learned of a William T. Turnbull, Sr., born April 11 1797/1798 in Dumfrieshire or Roxburgshire, died July 12, 1882 in Bureau Co., IL, buried in Elmira Cemetary, Elmira, IL. He was a shepherd in Scotland and came to the U.S. with family in 1840. His spouse was Mary Harvey, born 1800/1801, died February 12, 1873, in Stark County, buried in Elmira Cemetary. She had seven boys and four girls. Her last name was spelled Hormung. Their children were Robert Harvey, George B., James J., Helen (Ellen), Elizabeth, John Harvey, Alexander "Sandy", Margaret, Stephana, William T., and Thomas.
I was given this information from another Turnbull/Rule in Illinois.

Good luck with your search,
Carolyn Turnbull White
