Many thanks for your reply to my story on Elizabeth EVA. It sounds like you have solved the mystery of why I could find no record of marriage for her & James Marshall. I will have to keep looking for her entry into Australia, possibly as Elizabeth POWNING. I am attaching a list of EVA immigrants to Victoria (just for jour interest), that I found last night on the internet. I could not find any into Victoria called POWNING, but I think I will try for NSW, as the mention of Victoria on her children's BC's may be just a red herring, as her first child to James MARSHALL was born in Sydney c1854.
On the Victorian BDM Indexes I found a Richard POWNING married there in 1870. It is possible this is the legal spouse of my (husband's) Elizabeth EVA. She may have been deceased by then (I still can't find her DOD) or he committed bigamy. This was an easy thing to do in the old days, with no official checking of records. My own grandmother did this in 1940!
Elizabeth EVA & James Marshall's daughter Mary Ann MARSHALL also found herself in a similar predicament, as she never wed the husband of her 7 children, but I think it was a case of William George having been wed before, as she was very young when the first child was born. Her spouse was William George PALMER & he was a bit of a "mongrel". He ran off after the first few children were born, went to another lady & had 4 children to her, returned to Mary Ann & she ended up raising the other 4 children as well! She must have been very forgiving! When Mary Ann's children were registered, there was a different date & place given for their supposed marriage. They couldn't even keep the lies straight!
I would love to exchange info with you, from the research you have done in England. At the moment all I can give you is some birth/baptism records of Elizabeth EVA's children & the family tree down to the present.
