Samuel's father was John Joseph Etzwiler (May 12, 1825 - >1900) Married Mary A, Harner Sep 26, 1844. She was born Aug 1822 and died after 1900. I have census records for 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900 for their family. They had 3 children - Jonas A Franklin Etzwiler, Jacob, and Samuel. Jacob probably died as a youth.

John Joseph's older brother John George married Elizabeth Harner in 1835, and another older half brother Peter "William" married Sarah Harner in 1828.

John Joseph's father was Heinrich Frederick Etzwiler (1775 - Sep 1843). I have records of his will. He married Catherine Elizabeth Gruber by 1800 and they had children - an unknown daughter, Daniel 1800, Catherine Elizabeth 1805, Peter "William" 1806, and John Cornelius 1809 (my ancestor). Around 1810 Catherine died and he married Christina Dorothea Wolff. Their children were John Jacob 1811, John George 1812, (Abraham 1814, another unknown son, Anna Maria 1817, Jonas 1819 - these four all apparently died very young), John Joseph 1825, Maria Elizabeth 1825, and Lidia 1829.

Frederick was most probably the son of Hans George Etzweiler Jr. (Jan 13, 1745 - May 6, 1780). I have no direct evidence of that. But George was the only known son of George Etzweiler and Elizabeth Mueller. George Sr. came to the colonies from Switzerland on the ship Rosanna Sep 26, 1743. George Jr. married Maria Elizabeth Jury July 1, 1767. George Jr. served in the revolutionary war as a scout and was killed by Indians during a raid and was scalped. A monument to him was erected several years after his death.

Most of the Etzweilers settled in Dauphin County PA, but Heinrich Frederick took his family and went to Ohio, where he purchased land in 1802. I have to check my records, I believe they did not move until several years later. Only Daniel - the oldest son, remained in Pa. It was in Ohio that the spelling of their last name changed to Etzwiler. The children continued westward and some of the children went on to Illinois and others to Oregon.
