Hello Ellen,

I looked at the 1860 Census for Ohio and he is listed (at least I think it's him) as Louis Etter age 24 a Wagon Maker from Wurtemberg living with Johan Mill from Bavaria. He apparently lives with them but no mention of the 2 girls. I imagine that someone else, maybe a close friend or relative with a different name is caring for the girls. This was the year that his wife died. The 1860 census is Ohio, MAHONING, Roll 1005 Book 1, Page 164. I'm new at this genealogy thing so I copied what was at the bottom.

The 1870 census shows him married to his new wife, Mary Bauman (Baughman??) age 36, Wagon Maker from Wurtemberg and his wife is 38. Now here children are shown as Caroline,12; Amelia,5; Willie F.,3; and Elmore (Charles),1 month. There is no mention of Wilhelmina. Someone else must have been raising her. Karolina was changed to Caroline. With hand written records, things can get changed easily. The 1870 census is PA, LAWRENCE, Roll 1360 Book 1, page 171.

The next time I saw Louis Etter is the 1900 census and the 1910 census. The spelling of his name is Lewis at this point as it is on his tombstone. It's curious, he goes by Philip L. Etter, Louis Etter and then Lewis Etter. I have been trying to go back in time to find his parents in Germany. Yesterday, I got a hit in Wurtemberg when I put in Philip Etter in the International Genealogical Index at Family Search.org. What I got is perhaps his father. Philipp Ludwig Etter married to Magdalene Karcher April 30, 1833 at the Evangelisch in Knittlingen, Neckarkreis, Wuerttemberg. This could be his father because we had something from www.rootsweb.com that said Louis came from Knittlingen, so when I put in the info. into IGI at Family Search I put in the name and Germany and only Wuerttemberg and up pops Knittlingen! I'll get back to you on what I find, but I think I'll have to contact the Mormons for further info.

Can you scan in those certificates and email to me at sigetter@earthlink.net. I will scan in everything that I have and email to you at the posted email address for you. OK? I need to think this stuff through and I'll see what I come up with. By the way, Louis was married 3 times. his third wife was a widow, Mary Bishop Pratt.

I have been dealing with 3 different spellings and name usage which would make sense if his dad is Philipp then he would have called himself Louis to differentiate himself.
I'll get back to you.

Best,
Sigrid
