There is probably some connection because Etringer is not that common of a name. Our Etringer line came to the US in 1866 and did finally settle in Rozellville Clark County WI. There were serveral daughters who married and stayed in the area. Actually one of my nieces who lives in Wisconsin married her cousin about 4 times removed - they have a common Etringer Great Great Grandmother. One Etringer daughter also move to Minnasota I believe. Their US History is well documented. I can find Peter Etringer even in European records but none who married Helena Mueller in 1832. The area of Germany they were from changed hands from Germany to France to Germany because of wars and treaties. There is also a sect called Old Catholic's that still live in the area of Metz and I think that may have been the group that caused our Etringers to move maybe to France first and then the US. I will keep looking. It is my one big missing link to Europe in all our family lines.
