The Samuel Ethridge I am looking for was born in NC. I have the range of his birthdate, using census reports, as 1790 to 1816!! He died in Calhoun County, Florida between 1880 and 1885. His last name has been spelled quite a few ways, from Etheridge to Eatheridge!! My line spells ours "Ethridge". But other lines from Samuel spells their's "Etheridge".
His first wife is unknown. He had quite a few children by her, all born in GA: James @ 1838, Arlenas @ 1839, Ann @ 1843, Martha @ 1845, Nancy @ 1847, and, maybe, John @ 1849.
In 1850 he married Sarah Ducker Goodwin (b. @ 1819, GA) in Decatur County, GA. She had a daughter, Susan, by her first husband, Richard Goodwin, who died. John could have possibly been Sarah and Richard's child as well.
Samuel, Sarah and all of the children are listed in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census in Decatur County, GA.
Samuel and Sarah had three children together: Enoch @ 1851 in either GA or FL, Frances Lucinda @ 1855 in either AL or FL, and Isaac Samuel in 1859 in Florida.
In the 1860 US Federal Census, Samuel, Sarah, Martha, John, Enoch, Frances Lucinda, and Isaac Samuel are living in Jackson County, FL.
Sarah Ducker Goodwin Ethridge dies and Samuel marries Sarah Ann Scott in 1863. She dies and he never remarries.
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census Samuel, Enoch, Frances Lucinda and Isaac Samuel are living in Calhoun County, FL. In the 1880 US Federal Census, Samuel is living with his daughter Martha, her husband, William H Beck, and their family. He cannot be found in the 1885 census or any census after that. We have deduced that Samuel died sometime between 1880 and 1885 in Calhoun County, Florida. We believe that he was either buried in the Old Shiloh No. 2 Cemetery or in the Abe Springs Cemetery, both located in Calhoun County, Florida.
I do not have any info on James, Samuel's first born by his first wife, after the 1860 census in which he is living in the Wadford household in Jackson County, FL. I do not have anything further on Arlenas, Ann, and Nancy after the 1850 census. Nor can I find John after the 1860 census.
Martha, a daughter of Samuel's by his first wife, married William H. Beck on the 26 Dec 1865 in Calhoun County, Florida. Their children were: Elizabeth, Nancy, Henny, Jesse, Kizzie, Tony, Florance, and Edith. Martha died 05 Jan 1914, and is buried in the Abe Springs Cemetery in Calhoun County, Florida.
Enoch, Samuel's oldest son by Sarah Ducker Goodwin, married Nancy Ann Smith in Covington, AL. Their children were: William Henry, Sarah Frances, Isaac Samuel, Mary E., Nancy Ann, John Daniel, and Ellen Jean. Enoch was living in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida in 1880. He died 26 Jun 1894 in Milton, Santa Rosa County, Florida.
Frances Lucinda, Samuel's daughter by Sarah Ducker Goodwin, married Wilie A Kent on 26 Feb 1873 in Calhoun County, Florida. Their children were: Samuel William, Sophronia, Lucinda V., Wiley S., and Martha J. Frances Lucinda died by 1910, probably in Calhoun County, Florida.
Isaac Samuel, Samuel's youngest child and my great great grandfather, was born 17 Jul 1858, probably in Jackson County, Florida, and died 22 Mar 1905 in Calhoun County, Florida. His cause of death at the age of 46 is unknown. He is buried in the Old Shiloh No. 2 Cemetery located in Calhoun County, Florida. Buried next to him and near him are his son, Isaac Henry, and grandson, Isaac Alonzo. Isaac Samuel married Henrietta Davis Burke in Calhoun County, Florida, on 29 Nov 1878. Henrietta had previously been married to John G. Burk, but he had died. She brought one child, John G. Burk, Jr., into the marriage with Isaac Samuel. Henrietta and Isaac Samuel's children were: Isaac Henry, James M. "Boss", Rewen Charlie, Minnie, Lewis Ellis, and Charles Dempsey.
We hope to find out a lot more information about these families. We are having an Ethridge/Etheridge family reunion on March 21, 2009 at the Sam B. Atkins Park in Blountstown, Calhoun County, Florida. For more info about the reunion and/or to share info about the families please email me at email@example.com.
