If you haven't already, searching the VA state library web site may turn up some interesting documents.
Just passing along, saw your queries while searching for more info on Bowyer family and ran across this:
1869 deed transfer of "Bowyer Mountain Hill"near Castleton Virginia on Route 616 between Elizabeth Bowyer and George "Catherton" and others.Probably the original 1781 patented land of "Ingle Boyer" that was left to George Bowyer around 1823."Engue" buried just down the road from there on another survey report of cemeteries.
The site is slightly unfriendly at first, but worth figuring out.
