Thank you for posting this most fascinating message, with new, original source material.
There was indeed a Dempsey Etheridge and wife "Seley" in Norfolk Co VA. He was b. ca. 1773-74, and died 1824-25 Norfolk Co VA. She, Celia Myers, died before 1819 and Dempsey married a second wife Nancy Eastwood. Dempsey and Celia had three known children, Sarah Abiah, James and Thomas. Of the latter nothing has been generally known until your note appeared here. As for Dempsey being son of Luke and "Chrisey" Etheridge, that too is quite acceptable, although the authoritative Etheridge genealogy (Holtzclaw) makes Dempsey a "possible" son of a Moses Etheridge. However, if Holtzclaw, long since deceased, could have seen your note, he would have been of a different opinion. He does mention a Thomas as a "probable" son of a Luke Etheridge. This Luke was b. 1746 and the Thomas ca. 1770-71, which makes him a bit old to be marrying in 1842 in IL, but who knows... And this Luke's wife was indeed a "Crisey," or "Chrissy" as it is in Holtzclaw, her real name being Christian Hobgood. If one thinks he was too "old" to be marrying in 1842, one should consider that this was after all his second marriage, for Thomas Etheridge was married much earlier in Sangamon Co IL to Rutha Stripling, 16 Jun 1826, and then to your Eliza on 2 Apr 1842. Said Luke was son of Edward Etheridge, and Edward was son of Argyle Etheridge; Argyle son of Edward Etheridge; and this Edward was the fifth son of the immigrant Thomas Etheridge who died in Norfolk Co VA in 1671. Although Etheridge is the original spelling, many have spelled their name as Etheredge, as here, or Ethridge.
