Hi Charles;

That was a quick response.

A a bit more data for you that might be of interest: Mary Bernache (correct spelling: Berneche)Albert's mother was Marguerite Chaput.

Elias Estay was already widowed when he married Mary Berneche-Albert. He had been previously married on 9 May 1905 in Notre Dame, Ottawa to Marie Henriette Madore, widow of Vincent Villeneuve. Before that, according to the Notre Church register, Elias was married to Henriette Guerin. Haven't found that wedding. In both Notre Dame, Ottawa church weddings, the witnesses were priests from that parish. (Source: Microfilm of the Perish of Notre Dame, Ottawa)

I'm quite sure that Auguste who died in 1916 was in fact Elias. He died in St Charles Home for the aged, and the nun who gave the data to the Ontario archives may not have known him that well. I'll try and see if I can find his funeral, as there will likely be more info on who he was.

I was able to find the earlier data under the name STAY and STA in the US censuses.

Here is another wedding in Ottawa:
16 May 1904, Laurent Bourdeau, s/o Francis Bourdeau and Alphonsine Dulude married Ida Estay, d/o Solomon and Marcelline Barde.

That wedding came from the Drouin Blue books, and I'll have to check the church records (microfilm) to see who were witnesses.

Both Solomon and Laurent were from Vermont, St Alban's as far as I can figure, based on census data, although Solomon as you know was born in New York State.

Re the Adelaide Johnston who died in Carleton Place on 9 Jan., 1921, the Ontario Archives show her to be the daughter of Joseph Johnston, born Ireland, and Esther Jones, born in the US. Are you sure your data regarding Adelaide is correct? She was married a Dunn.

And according to the Ontario Archives, the parents of the Johnston child (unnamed) born on 6 Sept., 1873 in North Gower was the son of Robert A. Johnston and Elizabeth EMLEY. Of course the transcriber may have made a mistake in the name of the mother.

I also have another Estay. (Silas Estay above married my grandmother's sister-in-law) This next one, by name of Free Estee, (never heard of a given nmame like that - may be our Elias) married (or lived with - I never found a wedding) Mary Doré, d/o Lewis (Louis) Doré and Mary Jane Emlaw. From that "union" was born Nina Mary Estee in Campbellford, Northumberland County on 14 January, 1896. Nina Mary was baptised in the Catholic church there on 1 August, 1897. I was never able to find anything more on "Free" Estee. As for Nina Mary, I think she wound up in Toronto later-on with her grandfather who died there. In the 1901 census, Nina Mary was living with her grandfather and grandmother in Seymour Township, Nothumberland County. She was recorded as Nina M. Esta.
(My father was married to a Brophy, whose mother was an Emlaw)

Don't know whether this will help in your quest for your ancestors, but it does add to the Estay file.
