I am trying to figure out how to answer your question about where to go for information. I only use genforum at this web site. I believe this web site also has family trees. I cannot get you to Seth Joel Estes. Abraham Estes is the first Estes in Virginia. I seem to remember someone stating that all Estes in America are related to him. I am not sure of this. I will give you the names by generation to Joel Estes Jr. First, there is Abraham Estes. He had many children including Elisha Estes. Elisha Estes has several children including Joel Estes. Among Joel Estes's children was a Peter Estes, who was the father of Joel Estes Sr. of Estes Park fame. Joel Estes Sr. has a son named Joel Estes Jr. I do not have any information on the children of Joel Estes Jr. The Evans and Estes families married each other for two generations. My third and fourth great grandmothers were Estes. The fourth was the aunt of the third great grandmother. Abraham Estes came to Virginia in the 1700's. He had a large family. Each of his sons had a lot of children. His descendants spread out over Virginia but mainly moved to southern and western Virginia. By 1800, Joel Estes and his children were living in Madison County, Kentucky. By 1820, Joel Estes and his family had moved to Missouri. By the 1830's, Joel Estes was living in Clay County, Missouri. Most of his descendants at this time could be found in the area of what is today, Kansas City, Missouri area. Independence, Missouri is in Clay County. I believe that it was the starting point for the Santa Fe Trail. The Oregon Trail started near by. It seems that by the 1850's the Estes were spreading out all over the country. A good example of the movement of Estes family members is Joel Estes of Estes Park fame. He was born in western Missouri. In about 1849, he went to California. He struck it rich and sold his mine for $30,000 which was a lot of money at that time. Six months later, the mine was sold for half a million dollars. Joel Estes moved back to Missouri. He was the source of funds for the purchase of many farms by relatives. Later, he moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. He left there to get away from people and moved into the mountains and to Estes Park fame. Later, he moved to southern Colorado. It snows a lot in Durango so he may have moved to the Farmington area to get away from the snow and possibly gold miners. You can contact me at BHEEvans@worldnet.att.net for what I have on the Estes family. I have information on the children of Elisha Estes and the children of Joel Estes. There is a book that is out of print on the Estes family. I think the title of the book is "The Estes Family of Old Clay County, Missouri." The title is misleading. It represents the consolidation of two earlier genealogy books on the Estes family. Also, it might have the genealogy information to tie Seth Joel Estes back to Joel Estes. You might talk to your local librarian to locate a copy of the book. I know of only two copies in the state of Texas. Notify Administrator about this message?
