My ESSEXs where also of German origan. Their name was spelled ESSECH before they went to England in the 1600's. They where Palantines escaping persecution in Germany. The name in my family is still pronounced ESSICK however. I heard of one family named Essex in Ohio I believe that originated in Lebanon. The official at Ellis Island decided that Essex was what their name sounded like, so that's what they became.
