Judy, i was told years ago by Erling Skaar, a Hayward neighbor to the Esses, that the name "Esse" in Norwegian means blacksmith's forge. Today in Norway, the family name is spelled "Ese." I have seen the surname in England before 1600, in Holland as Van Esse, in Germany, with first names that appear to be Lebonese and in Spanish. My Hispanic students told me that it means "the man."
Cool!
Rob
