James Espey died in 1811 in Rutherford Co., TN. I have info from WFT Vol #4 -#1120 which gives his wife as Mary Overall. Probate records from Rutherford county verify his children as follows: RB 4, pg 163. Settlement of the state of James Espey, deceased. Amount of estate after deducting vouchers $3110.45. John P. Thomas legacy rec. $622.09. Obediah Biles legacy rec. $622.09, George Espey legacy rec. $622.09, Robert Espey legacy rec. $622.09, and William Espey legacy rec. $622.09. We have divided the above estate of James Espey, deceased, according to the assets found as above stated. Signed by John Smith and Frederick Barfield. In said Will to give that part of the property that was given to Mrs. Coley Espey the wife of the deceased, to Polly Overall and Rachel Goodloe, one negro man London, one horse, bridle and saddle, and one bed and furniture. Given to Catharine Thomas one negro man named Jim, on paying in twelve months to Sary Biles one hundred and twenty five dollars. To Sary Biles one negro woman named Grace. To George Espey three negros, Richard, Isaac and Winny. To Robert Espey three negros, Ben, Sarah and Washington. Divided this 1st January 1817. Signed by John Smith and Freck. Barfield. Returned to Jun Term 1818.
According to a note in the WFT Vol #4- James Espy died Dec 27, 1811, while Sheriff and is buried Espeyland Cem./Smyrna,Rutherford Co., TN. Their home was called Espyland, located on Falter Hill, Smyrna, Rutherford Co., TN and was used as a hospital during the Civil War.
I descend from Obediah Biles and Sarah Espy, who married on 28 May 1816. I have some further information on some of the above children, from the records of Rutherford Co., TN and WFT Vol #4-#1120.
