I too have been trying to find the split if there ever was one. I have my GGGgrandmothers line back to 1623,Midloathen,Scotland, to a George Espie and still no split. As you know the names Gillespie/Gillespey (Bishops servent) and Espie/Espey ( Bishop) mean different origins from a names point of view. If I luck out and find a split I'll keep you in mind. I did contact the MacPherson Scotish clan officers and they have not found a split either but assure me that espie/espey family is part of the MacPherson clan, a sept of the sept Gillespey. Hope this helps a little.
