Thomas Esmays in Albany Cty. Militia,5th Regiment

In "New York in the Revolution as Colony and State" under 5th REgiment, Albany County Militia, there are
TWO men by the name of Thomas Esmay listed.

The first is Lieut. Thomas Esmay, the other is the Thomas Esmay under "enlisted men".

Has anyone ever researched the military/and or pension file for Thomas Esmay, to see whether both of these references are to the same man, or whether they might pertain to a father and son?

This was a rather small unit, perhaps 60 men, and 20 or so officers. Could an enlisted man have risen to the rank of Lieutenant? I really do not know much about the ways ranks are assigned, but I do know that in this book men frequently appear several times, listed under different spelling variants and so forth.
