Hi, I'm Ernesto Eslava, born in Bogota, Colombia. My curiosity about my last name took me to find the following web site:
http://www.banrep.gov.co/blaavirtual/letra-b/biogcircu/eslaseba.htm
The link above has the biography (in spanish) of Sebastian de Eslava, born in Navarra,Spain in 1684. General Liutenant of the Royal Armies and Commander of Calatrava. In 1739 took a post as royal governor (Virrey) in the new Kingdom of Granada (which became Colombia in the 1800's). He defended the city of Cartagena (Colombia)in 1741 against the English who were commanded by Edward Vernon. In 1744,Sebastian de Eslava became Royal Governor of Peru. He resigned to that post to return to Spain, where the king Fernando VI gave him the title of General Captain of Andalucia, Director of Infantry and Minister of War, those in addition to his title of Marquee of the Royal Defense which he received after the successful defense of Cartagena. He died in 1759.

There is a small town in Navarra, Spain called Eslava, pop. 297.
