Here are excerpts of his obit from the Emporia Daily Gazette, July 16, 1900 pg 1: "Last Thursday while he was lying in bed he asked for a certain box which he said contained many valuable papers. Besides the papers it contained a 38 calibre double action revolver...Sunday morning about 3:30 he...asked that the family go to bed and leave him. His son Ed...heard a pistol shot...as Harris and Ed Eskridge were coming in the yard they heard it...Harris took hold of his hand, spoke and asked the Governor if he knew him...two bullet holes were seen in the left breast...Search was made and on reaching under the clothes the right hand of the Governor was found to be grasping the handle of a 38 caliber Smith & Wesson...later he told exactly how the pistol came to his possession and remained conscious to the end, and died from loss of blood." I don't have a scanner, but if you would call me I can arrange to mail it to you, (503)282-6696 you can usually reach me. It is a long, three column obit.
