Patty, I have some old notes and newspaper obituaries on Governor Charles Vernon Eskridge which I looked up again after getting your message. You probably have more info no doubt. My notes have that he was born in 1833 in Virginia but in 1834 his family moved to Licking Co. Ohio. In 1838 they moved to Lewiston, Illinois. In 1858 Charles Vernon moved to Kansas, settling in Emporia, KS with his wife Elizabeth Dixon. After he died in 1900 from a tragic suicide attempt, his widow and a son Edward moved to Los Angeles where they owned an orange grove. Vernon's siblings were John T, James F, and Sarah Ann Evans. Interestingly, another branch moved to Missouri thru Thomas Orlando Eskridge(George, Samuel, CHARLES, Hector). Thomas Orlando had 4 children. It's so interesting that both our families lived near each other in Emporia, Kansas, as one of my great-aunts lived there during Vernon's lifetime. My familyline can be traced thru the slave records of George, Samuel, BURDETT. My book will be ready to order in 2005.
