Colonel is a title that extends to usage outside of the army.Members of the Virginia House of Burgesses addressed each other as Captain during the first decades of its existence.Later that was changed to Colonel and continued as Colonel until the Revolution put an end to the Burgess. The man who served longest in the House of Burgess was George Eskridge of Westmoreland. His tenure spanned the time of the change from Captain to Colonel.During his early years he was often addressed as Captain. Later he was called Colonel as were all members of the House. He probably was a member of the militia from age 16 until he became a public official when he was exempt from military duty.
