If your Esau lived in the central Kansas area, there is a strong possibility she was a Low German Mennonite, or at least came from such a family. I have never heard the name or nickname "Metta" but maybe it was Neta or Nettie, which derives from Aganeta, and that was a very common female given name among the Mennonites prior to 1925. I would need specific names and dates to help you further.
