It is very difficult to locate birth records for Mennonites living in Russia in the mid-19th century. There are scattered birth, marriage and death records that exist for the beginning of the 19th century, but at this point in time none have been discovered for the 1850s. There is still hope that as more and more records are discovered in Ukrainian archives, that Mennonite church registers and census and vital statistics lists will be located.

If you are moving to Winnipeg, then you will have ample opportunities to search through the archives at the Mennonite Heritage Centre and the Centre for Mennonite Brethren Studies. Both have large genealogical collections. Another organization with an extensive genealogical collection is Mennonite Genealogy Inc., also located in Winnipeg.

All the best in your research.
