This is going to be a long post. I hope someone who can help me will take the time to slog through it all. I am trying to determine who the parents of Lucinda (Hawkins) Ervin were. James W. Ervin married Lucinda Hawkins in Martin County, Indiana, on 25 May 1854. I believe James's parents were John & Jane Ervin (listed as Erwin) in the 1850 census records for Rutherford Township, Martin County, Indiana. The only Lucinda Hawkins that I can find in the 1850 census of Martin County, Indiana, is in Columbia Township living in the household of John and Mary Ann Evans - household #96/96. She is 17 years old, born in Kentucky. She does not appear to be their daughter. Next door to the Evans family, at #97/97, is the Francis and Sarah Hamner family who have a Mary Jane Hawkins (age 15 b. KY) living with them. I think it is safe to say the these two Hawkins girls are sisters. There appears to be no relationship between the Hamner & Evans households. The only other Hawkins family in Martin County is that of James Hawkins and his 2nd wife Rhoda (Neal). It may be of note that the family living at #98/98 is Noble Neal who may be either the father or brother of Rhoda (Neal) Hawkins. Although it might be reasonable to assume that James Hawkins and his 1st wife Margaret (who died about 1836) are the parents of Lucinda & Mary Jane, some information does not match. In census records, Lucinda and Mary Jane say that they were born in Kentucky. All of James Hawkins' children (younger and older than Lucinda) indicate that they were born in Indiana. Most research that I have seen says that this James Hawkins was born in Rhode Island and that Margaret was born in Pennsylvania. In the 1880 census, Mary Jane (Hawkins) Waggoner gives the place of birth of her father as New York, and of her mother as Virginia. Although all of James Ervin's siblings seem to still be in Martin County, Indiana, in 1860 & 70, I cannot find James & Lucinda there. I DID find a James and Lucinda Ervin in Warrick County, Indiana, in 1870, 1880, 1900 (listed and John & Lula), and 1910; however, I do not believe that this is the James & Lucinda from Martin County, as the 1910 census says that they have been married for 43 years. This would put the date of their marriage as 1867. Also, the age of this Warrick County Lucinda is not quite right (not unusual, I know)and she gives her place of birth as Indiana, with both parents born in Kentucky. I found another James & Lucinda Ervin in 1880 Vanderburgh County, Indiana. This Lucinda is the correct age, and she says that she was born in Kentucky, both parents born in Virginia. These two appear to be more likely to be the couple who married in Martin County, Indiana; however, I cannot prove it. I also cannot find them in 1860,1870 or in 1900. Can ANYONE shed some light on this couple for me? Notify Administrator about this message?
