James Clerk of Pittencrieff married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Erskine of Otterston. James was retoured heir to his uncle Alexander Clerk of Pittencrieff on 19 July, 1656. He was eldest son of Gilbert Clerk of Pitteuchar, who was second son of Sir Alexander Clerk of Pittencrieff.
