Thanks for the warning. Out of frustration more than anything else I decided this morning to uninstall the 2012 software and return the 2012 Platinum Edition to Amazon, from where it came.

I then visited my local PC World store who were selling a number of versions of FTM. They were all being sold under the banner of Avanquest. Nevertheless, I chose the same edition as the one that I had returned and told the technical support guy all about my problems. He assured me that all of the Platinum Editions that they sold would have Launcher.exe start ups, despite what the Companion Guide says about installation.

Being sceptical, but still wanting to update my 2005 FTM I bought the Platinum Edition from PC World, but took out a monthly support subscription for their 24/7 Help and Advice from the remote fix Technical Support team.

I have now inserted the new disc and while it loaded FTM (via launcher.exe) and told me that it was successfully installed, (without reference to Avanquest) I still had to download a required update. However, I am afraid that having done so, exactly the same 'FTM has stopped working' message appeared. I was assured when I bought it that the Technical Support team would be able to fix whatever it is that is causing the problem. I'm not holding my breath but I shall continue to badger Avanquest (no reply to my request for help from them yet) and hopefully get my money's worth from the PC World support guys!

I'll keep you posted, just in case anything comes out of this that will help others with a problem like mine.

Does this surprise you that PC World are selling FTM as Avanquest software? I did ask the guy where I could get a copy that had no Avanquest connection and he seemed to think that that would not be possible. If this still goes pearshaped and it's down to Avanquest do you know where I might get a 'clean' Ancestry edition that installs as stated in the Companion Guide?
