Thank you for your response.
I thought I had to merge trees because GED.COM's did not carry images (altho at one point I was assured they did).So every time I switched from FTM to Ancestry and back again, I had to create a new file, so added images would not be lost.Or so I thought....Presumable the 'good' files would be in FTM or in DOCs. , since I could not go to Ancestry without creating a GED.COM.
I worked with a FTM Level Tech II the whole time I was merging, and we were working in FTM 2012.All my FTM 2009 trees had been converted to 2012.Of course, we thought we were backing up everything as we went, but somehow, at least one critical file was corrupted in the backup process.I have so many files now and I can't always find the original dates, so who know which is where?I have searched but never seem to find the best ones.Or when I think I have a good one, like just last night, I merge and get chaos.Last night I merged 2 pretty clean files and the media is there (but now doubled) but none of the 101 lost sources I was trying to re-include.It shows the work space but no index, and I am having trouble even getting rid of it.
I just spent the entire evening tonight adding those same sources ONE AT A TIME (not done tho) from one tree to my 'best' tree on Ancestry.
My biggest aggravation of all is the way A GGGG, etc GF/GM will be lost when I merge with the same person whose direct line was lost in a merge,I have no way to reject the bad merge or to over ride it even when I know the individual merge was done wrong.Often when this happens 20 or so good direct generations are no longer direct when the one person no longer shows as direct. It would really help if there were a way to over ride a bad merge, but there isn't even an 'undo' option as there is when you go to 'person' and connect a person to father, etc.
Yes, I have lost tons of media, sources, etc from each of the trees, for ex, 19thc newspaper articles I very laboriously added. The losses are often so random that I can not possibly reconstruct them.
I have no idea why so many things have gone wrong for me, but it has been extremely frustrating and disappointing to see months of work ruined.
