Russ,
Thank you for your response. These are the steps that I have taken thus far:
1. When I started having difficulties with 2006 on my 64-bit machine, I backed up my data on a flash drive. It automatically backed up as a .ftw file, but I’ve noticed that I have FTW Backup files and FTW Family files. I’m not sure what the difference is between the two, but I am unable to open either type.
2. I got an error message on the 64-bit machine that “Family Tree Maker Executable has stopped working” and another message that said, “Family Tree Maker did not shutdown properly the last time you used the program. There is a small chance that this may have caused problems with your family file. Click OK to continue working with your file. If you notice any problems, please go to the Help menu and choose Technical Support.” When I clicked OK, the program closed.
3. I attempted to open the .ftw backup on my 32-bit machine. I and immediately got the same message, “Family Tree Maker did not shutdown properly the last time you used the program. There is a small chance that this may have caused problems with your family file. Click OK to continue working with your file. If you notice any problems, please go to the Help menu and choose Technical Support.” When I clicked OK, the program closed. Prior to trying to open the backup file on the 32-bit machine, it worked fine.
4. Whenever I try to open a backup file, on either machine, I click on the file and I get a message that the file is open or in use. I’ve closed and tried to reopen the file, but it either opens to a blank file or says, “Family Tree Maker did not shutdown properly the last time you used the program. There is a small chance that this may have caused problems with your family file. Click OK to continue working with your file. If you notice any problems, please go to the Help menu and choose Technical Support.”
5. I did a test file as you suggested on the 32-bit machine and I was able to save it and reopen it.
6. I have been prompted to rename my files and have done so, but it seems now that I have upwards of 20 files with different names that open to a blank screen.
7. I was prompted on the 64-bit machine to uninstall and reinstall the program, which I did. Then, when I tried to open the program, I get an error message that says, “Critical components are missing. Please uninstall and reinstall Family Tree Maker.”
8. I am running the program on both the 64-bit and 32-bit machine as administrator.
9. This whole renaming files has me confused. What is the difference between .ftw and .ftm files? Also, is there a difference between family files and backup files? Like I said, I now have multiple files and don’t know which file is which anymore.

I certainly appreciate your assistance and taking the time to try to troubleshoot. It is certainly more support than I have gotten from Family Tree Maker.
Scott
