I’ll try to describe in more detail about my problem. FTM 2011 is shutting down suddenly sometimes at random but usually after I have completed some sort of action. Since I have been working with Books mostly since I installed it, it has been occurring while I am in that workplace. The most common action that causes it to shut down is changing the name of a smart story. Although it doesn’t happen every single time when I do this I would say it occurs 75%-80% of the time. I click on Book item properties and type in a new name for the item in the space at the top of the box, then I click ok and the program immediately exits and I’m back to my desktop. Windows then comes up with a box saying that Family Tree Maker 2011 has stopped working. When I restart the program it comes up with a box saying that FTM 2011 didn’t close properly last time it was used and suggests compacting the family file(which I have done, didn’t resolve problem)Other than those two, I am not getting any other error messages. Ill now try to go into as much detail abt what I tried from the support article, some of it may be a repeat of what I wrote in the previous message.
Windows 7 has been updated frequently, usually it updates automatically every couple of days, plus its a brand new system and I have not noticed any other problems with other programs.
I checked the FTM 2011 version # and it matches what was on the article.
I tested file corruption I opened a much smaller and unrelated tree that I had. I created a book and inserted a smart story and then tried to change the name, the program shut down. So I took that to mean that it wasn’t a problem with my main tree file.
Microsoft WSE 3.0 was installed on my computer when I checked using the steps on the article. I then uninstalled it and reinstalled it from the link to Microsoft on the article. Didn’t seem to make a difference, FTM still shut down.
As for the security software possibility I didn’t do the clean boot. I was having similar problems with FTM 2010 on my old computer which I didn’t have any security software other than the built in windows firewall. Now on my new system I am using the most current version of AVG and turned off the built in windows firewall. Since I have used two different pieces of software (and the windows firewall was much more limited than AVG) and experienced the same problem I don’t believe it is causing FTM to shut down.
I did the steps for determining if there was a corrupt user account. I uninstalled the program, created a new user account and reinstalled the program while logged in to the new account, opened up a tree file and tried to rename a smart story, the program closed like it did on the other account.
Let me know if you need more details. Thanks for your help!
