Perhaps the 'free offer' has expired. The move to 2009 is worth the upgrade, new features and speed being two. There is a Blog that tells you what is in 2009.

2009 will install into it's own folder and not over write 2008. You can uninstall it. It will, however, open the 2008 Family File in 2009. Also, you can re-open a 2009 file with 2008 if you keep it on your PC.
2009 will also open your 2005 Family File.
The Accelerator issue sometimes causes an Authentication error. There is a Knowledge Base article that talks about that problem, but you haven't mentioned that.
Are you saying that using the Web Search feature is slower then going directly to Ancestry.com? I find them pretty much the same, at least from the click to start the Web Search to receiving results. Mainly because it don't have to reenter data to start the search.
Yes, you can control Online / Offline in the File Menu of 2008 and 2009.
I think the 32 / 64 but is hardware. It should show up as part of Windows.
Not sure what PDF has to do with Merging. One is output the other input.
