You misunderstood. I have never imported a GEDCOM file. On 3/14 I created one that I uploaded to RootsWeb, where it is all displayed properly. Sometime after I did that, I would guess about a week later, the corruption occurred. All of the christening data is still there – date, location, and sources, all attributed to the correct individual. It is just the label that has been converted to a birth.
The very strange thing is that if I correct some of these back to christenings, or if I enter new christening data, and then close and reopen the file, the data still shows as christenings. Because new data does not get corrupted, this says to me that I had a one-time, run-time glitch that converted all christenings to births. While I do not know the structure of FTW files, my computer programming experience suggests that the glitch occurred in FTM, i.e., somehow the address of the christening label was replaced/defaulted to the address of the birth label. When I closed FTM, it saved the file with the christenings labeled as births, one time only.
While my hypothesis may be shaky, it seems clear to me that the christening labels cannot be recovered, and I have no choice but to revert back to the 3/14 version, which is going to be very painful.
