Russ:Thanks for the quick reply.I appreciate your long service - even on a Saturday nite - to this helpful forum.
The error message I refer to was written about extensively between 2000-03.It said something along the lines of "you do not have permission to access this file. Please see your administrator."A lot of people had to deal with this message, it is undocumented by the FTM folks who created it, and while there were some successes in the forum for some individuals, it was never exactly explained.
I found a bak CD I'd made three years ago and have been able to use that. The program worked on my Vista laptop (!) well enough to open and create GED files of those that were on the cd, so I'm partially set.It means that I will just have to retype the hundreds of entries created last summer for my Irish ancestors.
I hadn't meant to be unfair to FTM, I don't remember now why I thought FTM wouldn't work on XP, it was a very long time ago.As it seems to do fine on Vista, whatever the problem, it was not incompatibility.
I'd still like to be able to get those Irish.FTM on the Win98 computer still won't let me do anything at all with the files.I unchecked the "read only" boxes, and "archive" where I found that checked. It didn't help.
If you have any idea as to what is going on, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Pat.
