James Buford Yeats (Yates)was born between 1887 and 1890 in Jones County, Mississippi near Laurel. When he was a small child, his father John J. Yates, took him away from his mother, Louisa Jane Garrick Yates and ran off with him according to family histories.

When James was between the age of about 12 and 14 he was out on his own, why is not known at this time. He ate whatever he could find to keep from starving and was found by a man with the surname of 'Ericson' or a variation spelling of Ericson who took him into his home. Mr. Ericson taught my Grandfather how to work in the oil fields and that is how my Grandfather supported himself for the rest of his life.

In 1920, my Grandfather, James Buford Yates is found in Drumright, Creek County, Oklahoma with his wife and first child. Later he moved with his wife and children to Van Zandt County, TX. I do not know where he was taken by his father, John J. Yates between the time of his birth in Mississippi and when he appears in the 1920 Drumright, OK census. I would like to find out who the Mr. Ericson was that gave my Grandfather a home in about the 1899 to 1905 time period. Any leads will be appreciated.
