U.S. Census enumerators were instructed to write the state or country of birth. They were not instructed to write the specific location of birth. Very, very, very, very few enumerators misunderstood and wrote a specific location of birth but that is rare. Nordic meant Scandinavian (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, etc.) and the next column is the language spoken to further clarify where the person came from.

If she came in 1870, you should be able to find her in the 1880 and 1900 U.S. Federal Censuses too and if she came in time, maybe she can be found in the 1870 census. Remember that the 1900 U.S. Federal Census provides a month and year of birth, which helps narrow things down a bit. The 1900 census will provide another chance to check a year of immigration.

Marriage APPLICATIONS often provide additional clues, such as names of parents or a place of birth and I've sometimes found a specific location instead of just Sweden.

Check out the Swenson Center, mentioned in my last post. Many have found the Swedish parish of origin there and the parish was where records were kept in the parish. Since she married a Swedish man, it seems quite likely they attended a Swedish American church so that may be your best chance to learn more about her. I've learned a huge amount from those records.

Church, obituaries (especially from a Swedish American newspaper) and other records should have a birthdate or at least an age at death, which can be used to get a fairly good estimate of when she was born. Try some of the sources of information found on this site. (The site suggests places to check but information is not on this site.)
